Overview of Vanier Canada Scholarships
The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Undergraduate/Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain top-level PhD students and establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher education. Vanier students demonstrate leadership skills and a high level of academic achievement in postgraduate studies in social sciences and / or humanities, natural sciences and / or engineering and health.
Up to 167 scholarships are awarded annually to Footnote 1;
A total of 500 active scholarships at any time.

Application / nomination instructions
Before starting an application, carefully read the instructions of the application. The specific selection committees of the Vanier CGS agency are multidisciplinary; Applications should be written with a non-specialized research audience in mind.
Individual application documents can be sent in English or French.
It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the application is complete, including the evaluations of the referees.

Scholarships are distributed equally among the three federal donor agencies:
- Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)
- Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)
Confirm that you and your nominating institution meet all the criteria below before applying for a Vanier Canada (Vanier CGS) Graduate Scholarship.
NOTE: Nominations that do not meet all eligibility criteria will not be accepted.
Eligibility of the candidate
Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.
Qualified candidates can apply for both the Vanier Kanada Higher Scholarship Program and the special agencies (Seher, Nezirk, or Syrac) at the doctoral level / fellowship programs in the same academic year. Qualified candidates must submit Vaner and Special Agencies requests to the same federal donor agency, and must meet all eligibility criteria for consideration. Note: As eligibility, evaluation criteria and competition deadlines are different; applications to Vanier KGB are not considered in the agency’s specific PhD award competitions. Must apply to each program separately.
Candidates who have succeeded in each of the competitions must choose any prize to accept.
